WHERE WERE YOU WHEN Ninoy was no.1?, was the title of the event where this piece was presented that commemorated the 23rd anniversary of the assassination of Ninoy Aquino, Jr.

   His murder eventually led to the ouster of the Philippine dictator, Ferdinand Marcos.

   This commemoration took place at the University of the Philippines whose activists contributed much to the sustained resistance, both armed and unarmed, to Marcos.

   But now, UP and the students in general, are populated by the so-called Martial Law babies, or, more recently, the call-center generation. They no longer have a sense of the history of Ninoy, of the anti-Marcos resistance and the mostly 'left' movement for socio-political change.

   These questions then could come from a typical MLbaby and are addressed to the Oblation, the classical Greek statue found in many UP campuses that symbolizes the quest for truth, knowledge and justice.
