ZEN OF OUR ELECTIONS     2006

Tapas Lounge, Cebu City, Philippines

Matina Town Square, Davao City, Philippines

Videography ANGELA CHI

THIS IS YET ANOTHER piece on Philippine elections.

Performed again in both Cebu City, at the Tapas Lounge and in Davao City, at the Matina Town Square.

In Davao it was presented at a performance art workshop I facilitated and was organized by the Davao Arts Foundation.

The video documentation found here is of this workshop presentation.

The work makes liberal appropriation of materials that have to relation to elections except for the rudimentary box with a slit in the middle. A generic ballot box, if you will.

Each, however, contributes to characterizing Philippine elections as often subject to superstitious reliance on luck and chance, a repetitive and, just as often, pointless exercise sold and bought on change the promise of change for the better.

Yet, after all that, nothing much changes.

A conclusion that bears on the Zen theory and practice of enlightenment.

   Or, does it?
