FOR MOST OF PHILIPPINE history, politics is best described by one word: pornography. It has been an orgy of guns, goons and gold.

   With the former regime of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (GMA) the obscenity level was raised. She was caught – her mobile phone was tapped by military intelligence – instructing an election official to cheat massively, to the tune of at least a million vote margin over her nearest rival and to dispatch an uncooperative teacher with extreme prejudice.

   To kill her, in more prosaic language.

   GMA then appeared on national TV to apologize, but, she would not say for what. She would then hang on to whatever vestige of power by running for a lower office – she was prevented by the constitution to run again for the presidency.

   Pulverizing or wanting to pulverize the ballot box was a common reaction of many who saw the futility of elections.    

   The latest presidential elections, however, has restored somewhat the credibility of this exercise.

   Baboy or pig, in Philippine slang, stands for something thoroughly debased.
