Videography THEO PELMUS
THIS PERFORMANCE COMMEMORATED the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.
The performative action consisted of; my writing the Japanese characters of HIROSHIMA and DESTRUCTION, the latter over the former on a large sheet of white paper; shouting the Japanese equivalent of these characters (HIROSHIMA and HAKAI, respectively); ringing a Buddhist bell over these characters and inviting the audience to plant paper 'mushrooms' that had been distributed to them earlier.
On one side of this mushroom is printed the word LUNCH with the letter A in red in the shape of a bomb and a slanting bar across it, the popular symbol for the anti-nuclear arms movement.
This performance brings together my leanings towards word play, graphics, calligraphy, organic material, buddhism and shouting.
