CANADIAN SOIL   2011

Unibersidad Autonoma Nacional de Mexico

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Videography MELANIE MYERS

THIS IS MY SECOND performance for Cedisol (Centre sur la diversité culturelle et les pratiques solidaires).

The previous one, I did in 2006 when I was only a visitor to Canada.

Like that one, this performance tries to say something about immigrants.

More directly, about the contribution they or we make to Canada or a Canadian identity.

This time, however, the tone is more interrogative than simply declarative.

As with many of my performances, there is an interactive element to this one.

I distributed sheets of paper that asked on one side: we dream, sweat and toil, only to become canadian soil? / on rêve, on sue, on bûche et à la fin on devient de terraue canadien?

On the other side, the audience was asked to write: my contribution to Canada / mon apport à la société canadienne . . . and lines for filling up with the appropriate information.

After gathering these sheets I spread them on the maple leaf that is the central image in the Canadian flag, that I had painted on a canvas sheet while the audience was filling up their sheets.

I laid on my back on these, then draped a Philippine flag over my face.

Wherever your final home is, when you go, what do you leave behind?
